Welcome—and congratulations on your decision to explore foster parenting!

The New Foster Parent Academy includes various types of learning experiences:

  • Web-based training (WBT)—a course you complete online
  • classroom—an in-person learning experience facilitated by a professional
  • hybrid—a course that includes both Web-based and classroom components

As a new foster parent, you'll take the following learning experiences to complete your pre-service learning:

  • The Reasonable and Prudent Parent Standard, WBT (1.5 training hours)
  • Safe Sleep: Creating Safe Sleep Environments for Infants, WBT (2 training hours)
  • Child Development and the Effects of Trauma: The Essentials, WBT (2 training hours)
  • One of the following WBTs (select the course that corresponds best to the ages of children/youth you would like to foster. If you’re unsure, just pick one and you can choose others later):
    • Child Development and the Effects of Trauma: Infant and Toddler Development (1.5 training hours)
    • Child Development and the Effects of Trauma: School Age Child Development (1.5 training hours)
    • Child Development and the Effects of Trauma: Adolescent Development (1.5 training hours)
  • Foster Parent Fundamentals, hybrid training (13.5 training hours) (Note: You must complete all of the WBTs above before you participate in Foster Parent Fundamentals)
